Post Emirates Carry on Policy - not even a small purse?

Has anyone flown Emirates lately? I'm flying Economy Seattle to Johannesburg by way of Dubai. I'm headed on a safari. My weight limits for the safari are much lower than Emirates, but the things I want to carry on the plane (2 cameras, batteries, change of clothes, binoculars, things I need for an overnight in Dubai, etc.) are tough to fit in a backpack--more due to shape and size. I also need a purse with some travel items--pillow, book, EDC items. Do they strictly enforce the one-bag rule? I imagine everyone would have to take a small bag out of their carryon to keep at their seat even if they board with just one bag--slowing down the boarding process. I could use a duffel on the plane (in addition to the larger checked duffel), but would still need a backpack for every day and the extra duffel adds weight. Any ideas? Why is luggage always the biggest headache of any trip?

How strictly does Emirates enforce carryon bag size and weight? I hadn't noted the carryon measurements which are per Emirates 22x15x8 in addition to the 7kg or 15lb limit. My duffel is 21x10x9--so much smaller lL x W x H but 1 inch too wide.
