I'm considering taking a white sport shirt on the Mitteleuropa trip. It would be more versatile than another color and might blend in better, to the extent that Europeans don't seem to wear the variety of bright colors that Americans do.

But I'm concerned that it might be obviously dingy after a few wearings and hand washings. Does anyone have experience with this?

I think white shirts are extremely classy, especially in Europe (although white dress shirts more so then sport shirts, not sure what that is exactly). For hand washing, consider maybe using a bit of bleach and washing it alone? Or bring a stain stick for anything big... also, white looks brighter when put against darker fabrics so instead of khakis, bring black pants.

i think part of the answer depends on the material of the shirt, but yes i would bring one, esp in hot weather, and since you are already bringing a jacket. just don't wear it if you already know in advance that you are doing something 'messy' that day or eating spagetti.

I wear white tops on my trips in Europe, take a Tide-To-Go pen or similar product - great on white material for getting rid of stubborn stains (especially spags).
On white I use a laundry detergent with bluing in it, I prefer Woolite but anything like Tide for bright whites is good too. You can get those in travel size.

I have a white cotton/poly blend dress shirt that I got from Tilley Endurables years ago. It cost more than I would normally spend on a shirt/blouse but when I consider cost per wear, the shirt costs me only a few dollars per year. I can dress it up or down. Even at home I hand wash and air-dry it overnight. There's nothing like a nice white shirt after days of t-shirts, I will say that I haven't worn it on spaghetti nights but spills have come out with a little wipe with a wet cloth.

Coincidence: I read this posting during an airport layover on my return trip, as I was using a Tide pen on the very shirt while I was wearing it.

For laundry, I took about an ounce of Oxiclean in a small plastic bottle and used a little whenever I washed the shirt.
